What is pelvic floor therapy?

Elevation Health’s Pelvic Floor Therapy is evidence-based, multidisciplinary treatment that brings focus to the overall health and well-being of our clients with pelvic floor issues. We recognize that pelvic floor issues not only impact physical functioning, but can also impact other domains of our lives such as our emotional, social and mental health. Our Pelvic Health service will help clients identify and explore the care they need to reach their goals. We also collaborate with your current health care team, such as your family doctor, midwife, chiropractor, urologist or gynecologist as necessary. Together, Elevation Health’s approach will provide you with the skills you need to improve your function and reach your goals.

Pelvic Floor services are for all genders.

The main functions of the pelvic floor muscles are to support our organs (bladder, uterus, and intestines), control urination, control defecation, and to support healthy sexual functioning. Dysfunction of the pelvic floor is not uncommon after having a baby, the various stages of menopause, persistent pain conditions, post-prostatectomy, after hormonal changes or trauma. Even though these conditions are common it this does not mean it should always persist, and in many cases, there are treatments worth exploring to improve this.

What to Expect

Initial Visit: 75 Minutes

Our Pelvic Health Physiotherapist will conduct a comprehensive assessment and thoroughly discuss your current problems and symptoms to help identify areas of concern and assess pelvic floor muscle function. We understand the sensitive nature of pelvic floor dysfunction. We provide treatment for a wide range of pelvic floor conditions experienced by men and women. Making sure that you are comfortable is our number one priority; your sessions, therefore, are held one-on-one with an experienced Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, in a private treatment room.

With informed consent, your pelvic floor physiotherapist will perform a complete physical assessment of the joints and tissues affecting this area. This may include internal and external examinations to identify the affected tissues that may be contributing to your urinary, bowel or pelvic pain symptoms.

Based on your examination, you and your Pelvic Health Therapist will work collaboratively to put together a plan of care that is specific to your particular goals, symptoms and dysfunction.

Since every person has a unique case, it is important that your treatment is customized to address your specific needs.

Subsequent Visits: 30 minutes

Your follow up appointments will include treatment with your Pelvic Health Therapist that includes specific exercises for your pelvic floor based on your plan of care. Our physiotherapist will help guide your session with exercise, lifestyle changes, bladder and bowel behavior techniques and hands on therapy.
